Structures of Large-Scale Football Tournaments on Television. A Longitudinal and Horizontal Analysis Concerning the Quality of TV Coverage of Large-Scale Football Evenings

Thomas Horky

Abstract
In this article, we will examine the structures of large-scale football broadcasting on television, using the example of the final of the European Football Championship 2008, and, as a conse-quence, draw conclusions on the quality of sport in the media. First, a longitudinal analysis of the "German finals" in the World and European Championships of the past 14 years with a special focus on the last three tournaments will be carried out. Afterwards, the live broadcast of the final 2008 on German television will be analysed in detail. As a result of this investigation, an increasing loss of importance of sport journalism on television can be observed, while broad-casting times are rising due to an emphasis on comedic aspects and presentation.
