Calculation of the Energy Yield from Fat and Carbohydrates: Comparison of two Theoretical Models

Abstract
The long-distance athlete is supposed to maintain the highest possible work load for as long as possible without becoming exhausted. Regular training above the anaerobic threshold improves maximal oxygen uptake: At the same % VO2max the ATP-turnover is higher. Training below the anaerobic threshold improves endurance performance by extending the oxidative capacity of the working tissues: At the same % VO2max the percentage of enery yielded by fatty acid oxidation is higher while lactate formation is lower. By means of the mathematical model presented in the following the ATP synthesis through β-oxidation, glucose oxidation and anaerobic glycolysis can be calculated as a function of exercise intensity for different levels of (endurance) performance capacity. The concept is based on investigations concerning the regulation of substrate flux in active muscles and the interaction of chemical pathways. The Michaelis-Menten kinetics of the mitochondrial ATP synthesis serves as point of departure. It is simplified by polynomial approximation and projected onto the linear course of the steady-state oxygen uptake during step tests. The results are compared with those of MADER & HECK (1991) in the light of two case studies. Differences in the graphic presentation and in the understanding of sports biochemistry are discussed thoroughly.
