Die olympischen Spiele der Alpen. Der Zusammenhang von Volkskultur und Sport
The Olympic Games of the Alps. The Connection between Ethnological Customs and Sports

Reinhard Johler

Abstract
The relationship of popular competitions and modern sport has been the subject of several examinations, where the second is often seen to have developed from the first. Often it is assumed that popular competitions are the “losers” and sport is the “winner” of modernism. Seen from an ethnological perspective the author proposes a different interpretation: he dismisses the assumption of continuous process, underlines gaps and ruptures and tries to point out parallel tendencies. The essay will mainly focus on the illustration of the development of sport and popular contests, where both had contrary traits but were part of an identical process of modernization. In this process the role of ethnology can be seen as that of a mediator. Its representatives analyzed and described the research area with “sportive” definitions and were therefore able to trace it into the present. By this method the differences between sport and popular contests have surprisingly enough been almost dissolved.
